What is a (D.O.) Doctor of Osteopathy ?
Doctors of Osteopathy (DOs) base diagnosis and treatment on the theory that the body's systems are
interconnected. Instead of addressing specific symptoms or illnesses, DOs regard and treat the body as an integrated whole. Osteopathic medicine combines disease prevention and health maintenance
with conventional medicine.
DOs can prescribe medication and perform
surgery. Like medical doctors, doctors of osteopathy may serve as primary care providers. DOs can prescribe medications and order medical tests, such as X-rays. DOs often have privileges to provide
care to patients in a hospital. They can also become certified in all specialties, such as anesthesiology, obstetrics and gynecology or general surgery.
Like MDs, DOs must pass a state medical board
examination to obtain a license and enter practice. Each state board sets its own requirements and then issues the license for the osteopathic doctor to practice in that state. All states
require license for osteopathic doctors.
